This presentation will include an overview of the African American genealogy research process and a discussion of the types of historical records that can be used to break through the 1870 African American brick wall to find the name of an enslaver and location of enslavement. It will include 2 case studies (1 for free people of color and 1 for enslaved individuals).

This is session 1 of a two-part/two-day course and workshop being offered to those individuals who are about to begin or who are just beginning their genealogical research. In this first session, attendees will learn and discuss what is genealogy and genealogical research, what it involves, the available resources, and the strategies and methodologies for conducting and recording their research. Individuals who attend session 1 will be expected to attend session 2 in April.

Description:
This session is a follow-up to Genealogy Research: A Beginner's Course, Part 1. Having been provided with the basic steps, resources, and strategies for conducting a genealogical search in session 1, in session 2 the attendees will now put what they have learned into practice by conducting actual online research of family members. The attendees will be assisted in their research by members of the Delaware Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society (DEAAHGS). At the end of this session, attendees will receive a Certificate of Completion of the two-part course.

Black Genealogy Books: Celebrating the Genre for America's 250th Birthday
Pamela E. Foster, Ph.D., shares the breadth and nuances of the Black genealogy book genre from its earliest 19th- and 20th-century debut to the present post-Roots explosion. An AAHGS chapter co-founder and former chapter president and national board member, Foster will cover collecting Black genealogy books, the content of these books as explained by music, and massively celebrating these books in 2026 and beyond to benefit descendants' well-being and honor Roots' 50th anniversary.

Joshua Parker: The Godfather of Kent County
Syl Woolford
Joshua Parker rose from being a body servant to wealthy and politically powerful Delawareans to receiving political appointments in Washington, D.C. and promoting the recruitment of African Americans in Dover to vote Republican. This lecture gives insight as to how African Americans participated in the political process during the 19th Century and the challenges which they faced.
