 The Virginia legislature enacted a statute in 1738 requiring “free mulattos, blacks, and Native Americans to serve in the military”. Forbidden to bear arms due to colonial fears of uprising, they served exclusively “as drummers, fifers, trumpeters, or pioneers”.  The long history of African-Americans in military bands… including paid service in colonial times and jazz musicians in WWI is fascinating.

She will describe how she used a will, a Freedmen’s Bureau labor contract, a census record, and a death record to uncover the story of her ancestral family’s enslavement in Newberry, South Carolina from about 1822-1865, their living life in freedom after the Civil War, and the 1917 migration to Philadelphia by her great grandparents Rev. George and Fannie Tribble Glenn.
